When one thinks fingerstyle and young boy - the first thing that comes to mind is Sungha Jung. Sungha Jung has basically taken over the world by storm. However, on our sunny little red dot island, there is another 13 year old child prodigy who probably is at least his parallel in terms of skill. That boy is Kevin Loh, who has gotten praise from the head of the Yehudi Menuhin School guitar programme, Mr Richard Wright, as a "guitarist of limitless potential. A great talent."
With over 120 videos in YouTube alone, Kevin is poised to be an internationally-known guitarist in his own right. Here is a short interview with him to introduce him to Play Guitar Singapore readers.
How old are you now?
I am currently 13 years old. I started playing the violin at age five but was rejected by my teacher. Since my father played the classical guitar as a teenager, he thought he could give it a shot of teaching me and the rest was history.
Tell us more about yourself. (Achievements, etc) Describe your style.
I am just like any other school attending boy. I love to play the PS3/PSP and love building gundam figures as well. My latest craze is the Yo-Yo.
Some of my achievements :
I was the youngest to achieve ABRSM Grade 8 Guitar in Singapore
I was awarded the HSBC 2010 – Youth Excellence Award
I got my golf handicap at age 10
I played in Mosaic Music Festival under Bright Young Things in 2008
School is tough for kids these days - how did you manage to balance your guitar practicing with studies in school?
I did not really spend a lot of time practicing. I believe that my dad provided me with very good guidance and through short diligent daily practice, I was able to improve on my playing. I would practice between 30 min to 60 mins daily and probably more when I have concerts to prepare.
Where are you studying at the moment?
I am currently studying classical guitar full time at the Yehudhi Menuhin School full time. They include both academic as well as Music. I will graduate with A levels eventually. Currently I study like everyone academically but include, theory, classical guitar, piano, French, composition, I sing in the choir, and also play frequently in concerts.
What are your influences/idols?
My idols are Judicael Perroy, Manuel Barrueco and John Williams. They are concert and recording artist for Classical Guitar.
Between the steel string, nylon string guitar and the ukulele – if you had to pick one out of the 3, which one would it be, and why?
Classical guitar is my first love followed by Steel string and Ukulele. I also play some smooth jazz.

What kind of musician do you aspire to be?
I really hope to be a concert/ recording artist for classical guitar.
I’m sure that many of our readers would like to know how you manage to learn songs so quickly. What is your practice regime?
I do not really practice that much but my dad’s early guidance allow me to establish a very good technical foundation which allows me to pick up songs quickly. Typically I am able to play a song in 2-3 days.
What do you think of the music scene in Singapore?
I really hope Singaporeans would support more local budding artist. I hardly find any Singaporeans subscribing to my YT channel. I really hope all Singaporeans would support local budding artist. If you see some of the more popular channel, they are supported by many of their own from their countries. I hope Singaporean’s can support my YT and FB page
Any plans to come out with your own songs?
I started composing simple tunes but not guitar solos. I compose some duet for Guitar and Cellos and also Guitar and double bass. In time I hope to compose for solo guitar.
