1. Describe your style. Acoustic Unplugged. Yeah, i normally play accompaniment for singers, seldom play in a band though, we normally do unplugged style of performance. I do enjoy trying a variety of music, preferably bossa nova.
2. What are your influences/guitar heroes? Jamie Wilson (An australian guitarist who plays for asian artistes in concerts)
3. Tell us a bit of your history as a musician in Singapore? Not exactly a true musician, I dwell on it on a part-time basis, mainly due to interest & to keep my passion going.Some of the songwriting competitions I've joined before were school competitions organised by NTU, NUS,Touch Music( a local publishing company) Xinyao Jie'05 & Spop by Mediacorp in the past.
4. Do you teach guitar?
Yes, on part-time basis. I'm currently teaching Pop Guitar in FM Pop Music School, founded by 2 local songwriters with a deep passion in music, XiaoHan & Eric Ng.
5. What are you doing nowadays?
Just doing some regular performances at cafes, & ad-hoc wedding & outdoor shows. My group(闲杂人等) and I are currently performing at C'Nai HK Cafe at East Coast Park(Beside Mac) on alternative Fridays. Concurrently we are also performing adhoc at shopping malls, frequently at Kovan Heartland Mall. We mainly do Unplugged acoustic style of music. 6. Could you list the guitar gear that you use live for your performance?
Timothy S7, Yamaha Silent Guitar(Nylon)
7. Your favourite guitar/pedal/other gear?
Timothy, has a nice tone for its $. My Dream guitar will be a Martin J-40 Jumbo Dreadnought.
8. Any advice for budding musicians in Singapore?
A: Do what you like, like what you do. Passion is the key.
9. How is the compositional process like for you? Do you start with the guitar when you write a song?
It's been different cases for different ocassions. Most times I do it without an instrument though, it frees you from the boundaries of chord structures.
9.1 Have you any songs that have been published? (I think u have right? ;) dun be shy! )
Oh..yah I've a song published..in 3 different languages though. The Malay version is the first one titled "Senyumlah Kembali" by Alleycats, then the Mandarin version "不想" by a Malaysian singer 黎升铭 and lastly the Cantonese version in HK "清风世界" by 张信哲.
10. Do you compose with any other instrument besides the guitar?
Yes, with the piano keyboard.
10.1 What is the difference to you between composing with the guitar and the keyboard?
The difference actually only lies with the instrument. Composing comes in all forms, with or without instrument.
11. Do you think that the internet is a good or bad thing for music? Your view on illegal music downloading?
The world is evolving every moment, it's a natural process. From vinyl discs to LDs, to CDs to DVDs to internet music, it'll be difficult to curb this problem. What music makers will do is to change the image of music, from recorded music to the sale of live music, music that can only be experienced from the first person's view. This can't be downloaded.
